Project Details

Site Skills Training designed a 6-month heavy diesel training program for 15 of OceanaGold’s new entrant employees. The training is in line with OceanaGold’s program to support the socio-economic development of communities around its Didipio mine operation.

It was designed to develop candidates, who have no prior experience in heavy diesel operations and maintenance, into highly skilled and competent professionals with an Australian recognised course certificate.

Site Skills Training also supported OceanaGold in the recruitment process by designing an aptitude test in selecting the best possible candidates for the training.

Challenge
OceanaGold has created a workforce capacity development program for Didipio, one of the communities they operate in.
OceanaGold requires a large number of skilled and semi-skilled workers to operate the mine. However, there was only a limited pool of skilled labourers available locally.
OceanaGold’s Didipio operation is in the midst of aligning its safety and operational procedures based on Australian and New Zealand standards.
The Didipio operation has a relatively small number of staff. Hence, if training commences, the mine will have to go offline causing a decrease in productivity and revenue.
Solution
Site Skills Training worked hand in hand with OceanaGold to standardise safety procedures in the Didipio operation and to develop training programs for industrial skills, driver training and heavy diesel mechanics.
Training was also designed to accommodate employees in small groups to minimise the strain on the mine’s workforce.
Outcome
OceanaGold was able to realise its commitment in providing skills to 15 local recruits, and socio-economic development for Didipio.
OceanaGold is now better able to maintain its own heavy vehicle fleet—reducing reliance on external service providers, and increasing productivity.
OceanaGold’s standardised safety procedures ensure the efficiency and safety of all personnel.
Workforce development solutions were delivered without the mine going offline.
